North Olympic Discovery Marathon 2011

The race: This marathon – our second year running it! – follows a point-to-point course through fields, and finally along the coast, of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. The marathon was so sold out this year that the race director opened up another 100 spots.  We both improved our 2010 course times by 2 minutes; Greg PR’d at 3:35, good enough for 2nd in his age group! Once again, an extraordinarily well organized race, and what still appears to be the best post-race smorgasbord in the Northwest (Nutella! Ramen! Brown Cow yogurt!).  Be sure to mark your calendars for June 3, 2011.

All about the shirt:

Type:  long sleeve, zipper collar.
Color:  psychodelic lima bean.
Material: light, breathable polyester mesh.
Manufacturer: 10,000 ft Above Sea Level.
Narrative: Full disclosure: NODM is, thus far, our favorite northwest marathon. To begin on a positive note, this year’s shirt conveys the textile equivalent of the exuberance that the event staff and volunteers keep bringing to this race. But in all critical fairness, this psychadelic lima bean is a marked departure from a line of heretofore quality merchandise. The race directors clearly have design sensibilities: the medal is one of the national favorites, and previous years’ shirts have been uniformly superlative. But even impeccable design accumen falters when paired with hallucinogens. Warning, do not wear if you wish to remain unseen.

All about the shirt:

Material:  Preshrunk cotton.

Narrative: Although the design and material didn’t change one bit, the white background and cool blues used in the logo are a vast improvement over the 2007 and 2008 renditions.

Portland 2009

Thanks to Paul Gentry at 26point2medals.com for the shirt.

Portland 2009 – front

Race: Portland, Oregon - http://www.portlandmarathon.org/

All about the shirt:

Material: Polyester mesh
Manufacturer: Nike
Type: Long-sleeve technical.
Narrative:  The Portland artistes found a design they liked and stuck with it. We like it, too. A block of text on the front of the shirt rattles off the many landmarks you’ll encounter along the race course and finishes with an apt “WHEW.” Once you’re familiar with it, you’ll agree that it makes for a nice, recognizable logo. Well done, Portland!

Portland [unknown year]

Thanks to Paul Gentry at 26point2medals.com for the shirt.

The racehttp://www.portlandmarathon.org

All about the shirt:

Type:  Short-sleeved t-shirt.
Year: Unknown.
Material: Polyester mesh.
Manufacturer:  Leslie Jordan Appeal Design & Mfg. Co.
Narrative:  Sizes run large, and the fit is overly generous, especially under the armpits and the arms themselves. Otherwise, it’s an appealing specimen. Portland icons – roses, a train, Mt. Hood, and a clock tower – enthusiastically burst from the large, colorful front image. The race name cuts across the bottom of the graphic, tastefully set off against the grey background with black-outlined white lettering. The back of the shirt display’s the race name with a cleverly-placed rose “O” in the word “marathon.”

Victoria 2010

Victoria 2010 - women's - front

Victoria 2010 - men's - front

The race: A loop that starts and ends a hop, skip and a jump from Victoria’s Fairmont Empress Hotel. You’ll run through downtown, charming parks and neighborhoods, along fabulous stretches of waterfront with sweeping views of the harbor, all the while surrounded by enthusiastic crowds. This exquisitely well-organized race boasts thousands of runners yet somehow preserves the appeal of a less populated event. Perhaps our favorite feature is that married couples (hopefully defined more liberally in Canada than in the US) can run as teams. Greg and I ran as Team Haole in 2010 and missed 3rd place by 2 seconds! We look forward to making Victoria B.C. an annual habit.

The Race: Victoria, B.C. (Canada) - http://runvictoriamarathon.com/

All about the shirt:

Type:  Long sleeved technical shirt; fitted, but fits to size; women’s version extends just below the rump.
Year: 2010.
Color:  Ocean blue (women), black with red trim (men).
Material: Dense, weighty polyester
Manufacturer:  New Balance
Features:  Lots. Refer to narrative for a complete list.
Narrative: This life-changing shirt (well, these shirts, since there are gender specific versions) is appropriately characterized by the race’s date – three perfect 10s. I wish I had one for every day of the week. The tailored, long-ish fit transforms me into a fierce and sexy athlete. Sometimes I slip on this shirt merely for the self-esteem boost. And I swear it improves my pace by ~ 10 seconds/mile. Greg looks like a racing demon in his black and red version. We love all the snazzy features – the iPod holder, thumb-holes, reflective strips, thick yet incredibly breathable fabric, a neck-chest zipper pull that stays in place during runs (and for the women’s shirt, some “modesty mesh” for when you unzip as low as you can go) – behold the platonic ideal of a cool weather running shirt.  Victoria, we’re dying to know how you’ll top this for 2011.

Seattle Rock & Roll 2010

Thanks to Paul Gentry at 26point2medals.com for the shirt.

Seattle Rock & Roll 2010 - front

The race: Seattle, Washington - http://seattle.competitor.com/

All about the shirt:

Type: Short-sleeve technical.
Color: Green.
Material
: Polyester mesh.
Manufacturer: Brooks.
Narrative: Remember this high-energy specimen on St. Patrick’s Day! In the meantime, let kitty sleep on it. A bit too clumsily contrived for a race through the Emerald City. Another disappointing feature is that the shirt doesn’t specify whether you completed the half, full, or keg-o-thon. Let your admirers use their imaginations.

Flying Pig 2007

Thanks to Paul Gentry at 26point2medals.com for the shirt.

The Race: Cincinnati, Ohio. http://www.flyingpigmarathon.com/

All about the shirt:

Type: Short-sleeve technical.
Color
: Grey.
Material
: Polyester mesh.
Manufacturer
: Asics.
Narrative
: The disjointed front features several different fonts and impossibly tall, lean silhouetted runners atop a nonsensical clock displaying the race date, atop a rear view of a winged pig (Pig-asus?). Surrealist influences are clear and unfortunate. On the plus side, the back makes it clear that you, you rockstar, finished the full marathon.
